A lantern from the Courrières Mine Disaster is a main artifact of "Parks and Rehabilitation".

History[]

It was re-discovered in Cowan National Forest in Oregon: a pair of hikers reported to local forest rangers that they first felt the ground start shaking, then they saw a blue light through the trees and heard a man screaming for his life. When they went towards the screaming they found the man dead and almost completely buried. It was later discovered that the brother of a convicted eco-terrorist was getting revenge on the people he believed betrayed his brother by using the lantern to both kill them and dispose of their bodies. His end-game was to use the lantern to bury an entire logging camp, killing dozens of people, in order to carry out his brothers dream. However, Pete and Claudia deactivated the lantern before any more people were killed by it.

Effects[]

Holding the lantern causes it to shine a brilliant blue light that can shift the ground. The effects of this can range from small sinkholes to massive landslides. It seems to need manual deactivation, however, as it continued working after it had been accidentally dropped and only shut down when it was retrieved.

Real World Connection[]

Once belonging to the survivors of the Courrières Mine Disaster of 1906 where thirteen miners made it twenty days underground as they tried to tunnel out. They were so singularly focused on their goal, that the lantern was imbued with the ability to move and control the earth.[1]
