Bifurcated artifacts, also referred to as bifurcated objects[1] or two-part artifacts,[2] is an artifact with at least two parts that are dependent on each other to function or be neutralized.[1]
Description[]
Bifurcated objects produce odd results when introduced to neutralizer individually, likely because all of the artifact is not present. The non-present part is clear of the neutralizer, allowing it to remain active. For example, when Poe's notebook is introduced to neutralizer without the pen, the neutralizer turns it to ink instead of reducing the activity level like it would with single-object artifacts. When all of the bifurcated object is together, the artifact stops acting up as if it were doused in Neutralizer; whether this causes the artifact to become inert or just allows it to be controlled and used appropriately is unknown.[1]
Bifurcated artifacts tend to naturally want to be together and separating them is extremely unwise. For example, the quill pen and the notebook became extremely agitated when they where separated and took control of Myka's father and a university student in a desperate attempt to be rejoined with one another.
Some possible bifurcated objects could be the Aztec Bloodstone and its headdress, Excalibur and its stone, Robert Louis Stevenson's Bookends, Walter Winchell's Tie Clip and Cuff Links, Clara Barton's Gloves, and the Hatfield and McCoy Rifles. Another type of bifurcated artifact could be the Zeus and Hera statues which can't be together and must be separated or else they may cause unknown trouble, similar to an anti-bifurcated object. Some artifacts are just more than one of the same object, but aren't necessarily dependent on each other. Examples of these include W.C. Field's Juggling Balls, the Iceflower Fireworks, the Babel Stones, Carey Loftin's gloves, and Philo Farnsworth's Transmutational Three Dimensional Camera/Projector.

Non-Bifurcated Multi-Part Artifacts[]
Some artifacts naturally comprise of multiple parts that can be neutralized on their own, or can only be neutralized using or when with another object that may not itself be considered an artifact. As, in those cases, not every component displays its own artifact properties, they may not be considered true "artifacts" or "bifurcated artifacts". Additionally, some artifacts can be separated into their own constituent pieces without destroying it, thus rendering them inert unless the pieces are put back together. Example include:
- The 42nd Street Film Marquee contains a number of light bulbs, and can only be deactivated when all of them are removed or destroyed.[39]
- The Aztec Bloodstone can activate on its own and only be neutralized using an accompanying headdress "key" that must be inserted into its head, but the headdress is not known to display any properties of its own.[40]
- Bobby Jones' Golf Clubs could be neutralized individually.[31]
- Whether Excalibur is actually considered an artifact at all is unknown, but its property to become intangible when exposed to the same metal it was forged with is not the same as being incapable of neutralization without another sample of said metal.[41]
- Ferdinand Magellan's Astrolabe was rendered inert when its alidade is separated from its main body, and could only function when they were reunited.[42]
- Franz Mesmer's Magnets could be neutralized individually.[12]
- Fredric Wertham's Spinner Rack can only be activated when the accompanying sign, which acts as a battery to power it, is placed on top, and is thus inert on its own. The Rack was also collected with Wertham's personal collection of comic books, so it is unknown if the Rack's effects can work with any comic book, or only that specific collection.[43]
- Similarly, the Hatfield-McCoy Rifles appear inert on their own (though still able to display anomalous properties in being able to see through each other's scopes), but become dangerously active when in proximity to each other.[44]
- Hatshepsut's Golden Beehive
- Hiram Abiff's Tools and their process of moving the Warehouse's inventory was shown to be unstoppable by conventional means (the artifacts could not be destroyed and neutralizer evaporated), but could be stopped by dismantling the Setting Maul that started and ended the process, not by bringing all components together. The Setting Maul was separated into its handle and head to render it inert.[27]
- The Honjo Masamune could only function when reunited with its tsuba, rendering it inert otherwise.[25]
- Jimi Hendrix's Guitar
- The Lenape Tribe's Cloak can shed pieces of itself that bestow the same effect of the cloak as a whole on a smaller scale (i.e. the whole claok allows for total-body intangibility, while a single feather can only affect one's arm), and these pieces can be neutralized properly.[45]
- Lewis Carroll's Looking Glass was shattered by Alice Liddell, shattering the glass into many shards and separating them from their frame. At least one shard was shown to still contain its original property of swapping Alice's consciousness with someone's outside the mirror, and could be neutralized without the rest of the mirror.[34]
- Louis XIV's Silverware Forks could be neutralized individually.[9][27]
- Like the Aztec Bloodstone, Ludwig van Beethoven's Clock can activate without the accompanying bust of Aphrodite on top, but can only be neutralized and its effects reverted when they are brought together. The bust itself, however, is not shown to display any properties of its own.[46]
- The Minoan Trident was separated into a spear-like shaft and its side prongs to render it inert.[15]
- Mother Shipton's Tarot Cards could not be neutralized even when together, and their effects would only cease when the prophecy they foretold was completed.[47]
- The Nisqually Totem Pole
- The Philosopher's Stone, like the Lenape Cloak, is shown to have pieces taken from itself retain their properties on a smaller scale (in the Count of Saint Germain's Ring, containing a single piece of the stone, being able to revive dead plants),[48] and its full potential can only be achieved when it is reconstituted in whole.[49] However, like Excalibur, whether it can even be classified as an artifact, and thus if it can be neutralized (in pieces or as a whole) is unknown.
- Rheticus's Compass.
- Riverton Maximum Security Prison and Warden Matthew's Quartz Cross.
- Spartan Armor
- The Statues of Zeus and Hera are, in a sense, "anti-bifurcated" artifacts in that they are inherently a pair, but must not be kept in proximity to each other so as to keep them inert.[32]

The goo fizzed a little, and he caught a glimpse of a few flickering sparks, but it was hardly the usual blinding flash. “Okay,” he commented, “I don’t think that was fully neutralized.” "Didn’t seem like it,” Myka agreed. Her brow furrowed as she tried to puzzle it out. “Maybe we’re dealing with another two-part artifact, like Poe’s quill and journal, or Robert Louis Stevenson’s bookends? In that case, we’d need both items to neutralize them.”" Warehouse 13: A Touch of Fever, Chapter 5
