Pete and Myka are in Lakefield, Illinois investigating the disappearance of a walking stick from the museum of British history. The wielder of the stick has the ability to create miniature earthquakes by pounding it on the ground. While poking around the museum, Pete gets a little nutty with the exhibits, grabbing a Sherlock Holmes style pipe and glasses, holding up an earhorn to his ear, and tapping out a message on a telegraph. His hijinks are interrupted by the sound of a returning security guard. He has the stick and has been bringing it back every night so no one would miss it. Myka and Pete get the drop on him, but he uses the stick to cause a tremor and takes off. Pete and Myka head off in different directions but before they can catch him, Pete encounters Mrs. Frederic in a limo. She tells him to let the suspect get away, not tell anyone on his team, and she'll explain later. Myka emerges and is surprised that the guard, named Malone, gave Pete the slip. Later, an old flame of Pete's named Kate, now with the Chicago PD, helps get Myka and Pete out of their mess.

Meanwhile, at the Warehouse Regent Benedict Valda pays Artie and Claudia a visit. He says the Regents aren't happy with the way things are going. So, he's going to be sticking around to make sure artifacts are bagged and tagged and stay safely in the Warehouse. He hands Artie a computer chip which piques the interest, naturally, of Claudia. Pete and Myka return during this conversation, get snippy with Valda and then with each other about Malone getting away. Artie tells them to go back to Illinois and get it done. Myka starts to leave and asks Pete if he's coming. He begs off saying he has a "thing."

His "thing" is to meet Mrs. F out by an abandoned building. She tells him there's a mole somewhere in the Warehouse and since she's sure it isn't him it must be Artie, Myka, or Claudia. He can't believe this but agrees to help her figure out what's going on, even though he doesn't like keeping secrets from his team.

Pete and Myka go to toss Malone's apartment looking for clues and Pete notices Malone outside talking to a man. He tells Myka to stay put and goes to investigate. He see what he thinks is Valda doing an exchange with Malone and freaks out - a Regent is the bad guy. He Teslas Malone and gets Myka, but when they return Malone is gone. Pete keeps to himself Valda was there.

After Artie installs whatever info was on the chip, Claudia hacks into the system to see what it was and it includes a dossier on herself. That dossier includes a page on ways to kill her and she's mortified. She prints it out and asks Artie what's up. He wonders if she doesn't have a boyfriend to bug with this stuff. She informs him she was dumped and to not change the subject. Artie says there's a dossier like this on all of them and it's the price of doing business at the Warehouse.

Pete and Myka return and instead of helping Myka sift through evidence Pete says he has a "car thing" he has to take care of. He meets with Mrs.F and tells her Valda is their man. She says it's even more important then for Pete to catch Malone and get the stick so they'll have evidence against Valda. She tells him to come back to their meeting spot and break a hole in one of the building's windows if he needs help.

As Myka sifts through the evidence, she keeps remembering Pete's strange behaviors and deduces he's drinking again. She confesses her fears to Artie and Claudia. The four of them promptly stage an intervention. Pete is mad and conflicted and sad because he can't explain his strange behavior but needs them to believe he isn't drinking. He assures them he's not and stalks out.

He goes to talk to Mrs. F at their spot but gets a call from Valda who says he knows Pete and Mrs. F are onto him and he's kidnapped Mrs. F for safekeeping. In exchange, he wants Malone and the stick. Also he threatens Artie, Myka, and Claudia. Pete tells him "game on."

He heads back to the B&B, gets an arsenal together and leaves a note for the gang saying "don't follow me, watch your backs!"

He goes back to Illinois to find Malone. He calls Kate to get information on Valda. He finds Malone and the stick but Malone swears he doesn't know what Pete is talking about when he asks about Valda. Pete meets up with Kate who says it's weird, on paper Valda doesn't exist and she wants to know what's going on. The waitress serving them coffee seems to take an inordinate interest in Pete's deteriorating state. (If you'll recall, one of the Regents near the Warehouse is a waitress.) Pete says he can't really tell Kate what's going on but it's big and secret and involves protecting the whole planet. They briefly discuss how hot she is and start making out. This moves to a bedroom somewhere where as they're about to get it on Myka busts in and is all "Pete what the hell are you doing?" She tells Kate to leave. He uses the walking stick to cause a tremor and skedaddle. As he runs out, Myka gives chase, and Kate pulls up in a car and yells for Pete to get in but before he can, a sniper on a roof shoots Kate. Pete runs off and Myka is freaked.

Myka checks in with Kate and it turns out she's just fine. What is happening is Pete is having some weird hallucinations. This is proven by video from the cafe where Pete allegedly met Kate before their tryst gone wrong. It shows Pete making out with the air. Myka reports into Artie that Pete has gone, "around the bend." She and Artie try to figure out why. She's back at the museum and notes he touched a bunch of stuff in there and Artie wonders what since some of it could be artifact-y. They zero in on the telegraph realizing it has bent him neurologically somehow.

Pete gets a bead on Valda again and leaves a note on his car telling him to meet him at a junkyard. Myka calls Pete and tries to explain and hears him give the address.

When Valda arrives at the junkyard, Pete zaps his two bodyguards and ties Valda up. Myka and Artie arrive with an antidote to the telegraph poisoning: the original recording of "Oye Como Va." They talk to Pete about the telegraph but he's still hallucinating Valda is threatening them all and has a vision of a shootout that ends when Artie improvises some kind of sonic ray gun, bouncing the music off a windshield which knocks Pete out. They help him up and he's all better. They untie Valda.

Back at the Warehouse, Pete is chagrined but everyone understands he was not himself. Mrs. F shows up and Pete apologizes to her, but not before he touches her face to make sure she's real. She is and not amused. She says, under the circumstances, Valda forgives Pete. She tells Pete to take some time off. Pete turns to point at his paperwork and says when he's done with it he will. He turns around and Mrs. F is gone.

At the B&B, Claudia presents Artie with an alternate list of the ways she would prefer to die. He looks at it and says since he knows David Bowie, it shouldn't be a problem.

Pete and Myka decompress and he unfortunately comes across a USB drive. Myka begs him not to play it but he does: it's the video of him making out with the air. Instead of being mortified, he's psyched that even solo he's still got the moves.

Co-Starring[]

  • J.P. Manoux as Lenny Malone
  • Andrew Hinkson as Museum Guard
  • Ted Ludzik as Limo Driver
  • Jennifer Goodhue as Chicago Waitress

Artifacts Featured[]

  • Telegraph from Telegraph Island: Causes the victim to suffer from vivid hallucinations by tapping into subconscious anxieties as well as increasing insanity. The effect can only be cancelled out by a visual and auditory overload of a person's senses. It is the main artifact of the episode.
  • Brigadier General Laverlong's Walking Stick : Causes localized earthquakes.
  • Tito Puente's Original Studio Master of "Oye Como Va": Cancels out hallucinations and mental delusions via audio output.
  • David Bowie's Costumes: Part of a contingency plan for Claudia Donovan, written by herself: "Lock in a room with David Bowie's most famous costumes (Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, etc.), a full Guitar Player Kit and the Lou Reed Music Transformer Machine artifact set to Maximum Power."
  • "Denis d'or": One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans, to be focused through the Klaas Aperture to induce a lightning strike "by the Warehouse electrical storm". Effect(s) uncertain.[1] The Denis d'or (Golden Dionysus) is thought to be the first electronic musical instrument in history.[2]
  • Harman Rundfunk Helmet: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans. Has the ability to erase memories.[1] Its origins are uncertain, but "rundfunk" is German for "broadcasting" or "radio", which may be an aspect of its function or origin.[3]
  • J. Moysan of Blois' Miniature Skull Clock: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans, to be used in conjunction with Moriz Gottschalk's Fairy-Castle Dollhouse. It has the ability to shrink people.[1] J. Moysan of Blois was a French watchmaker who had been commissioned to create a miniature skull watch, a popular representation of the concept of memento mori at the time, for Mary Queen of Scots, and likely created many more of the same kind.[4]
  • Klaas Aperture: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans, through which the Denis d'or is to be focused to induce a lightning strike. Effect(s) and origin uncertain.[1] Aside from the possibility it may be an original artifact, it may originate from Klaas Bom (an engineer), Klaas Kruik (an astronomer and weatherman), Klaas de Vries (a composer), or Klaas Gerling (a DJ).
  • Lou Reed's Music Transformer Machine: Part of a contingency plan for Claudia Donovan, written by herself: "Lock in a room with David Bowie's most famous costumes (Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, etc.), a full Guitar Player Kit and the Lou Reed Music Transformer Machine artifact set to Maximum Power."
  • Maitland's Musical Brainnumber: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans. Origin and effect(s) unknown.[1] May originate from John Maitland, a music critic who was criticized for failing to acknowledge the talents of several composers including Arthur Sullivan, and was later revealed to have falsified facts in a critique of him. He had also been slow to recognize the worth of contemporary composers such as Strauss and Debussy.[5]
  • Moriz Gottschalk's Fairy-Castle Dollhouse: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans, to be used in conjunction with J. Moysan of Blois' Miniature Skull Clock. Effect(s) unknown.[1]
  • Pius Device: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans. Origin and effect(s) unknown.[1] May be the PIUS (Process Inherent Ultimate Protector) reactor, a Swedish light-water reactor designed to not require manual operation or external energy supplies to maintain.[6]
  • Sylvia Plath's Typewriter: Drains away the energy and will to live of those in proximity to it. Listed among Claudia's contingency plans.[1]
  • Volta Press: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans. Origin and effect(s) unknown.[1] May or may not be related to Alessandro Volta, but it is also the name of a letterpress and design studio located in Germany, founded in 2007.[7]
  • Wyatt Earp's Lariat: One of the artifacts listed among Claudia's contingency plans. Stated to have incapacitating properties.[1]
  • Music Box: Origin and exact effect(s) unknown. Implied to have affected an Agent Sweetwood adversely, possibly causing him to go crazy. Mentioned in a deleted scene.

Trivia[]

  • The episode's title is based on the phrase "go around the bend", which, according to some travel agents and journalists, originates from Telegraph Island, a reference to the heat making British officers desperate to return to civilization, which meant a voyage around the bend in the Strait of Hormuz back to India.[8]
